Elgin Community College (ECC) reached an exciting milestone today as the former D Hang Out Bar & Grill, 550 S. McLean, was demolished. This marked an essential step forward in the development of the college’s new, state-of-the-art Manufacturing and Technology Center. The facility, which will span 150,000 square feet upon completion, will expand ECC’s offerings in high-demand technology and manufacturing programs while providing the latest training resources for students entering these fields.
The demolition symbolizes the college’s ongoing commitment to adapting its campus to meet evolving workforce needs and strengthening local partnerships in these sectors. Designed to be one of the region's premier training facilities, the Manufacturing and Technology Center will offer advanced labs, cutting-edge technology, and collaborative spaces for hands-on learning for programs such as IST Maintenance Technology, Industrial Manufacturing Technology, Welding, Energy Management, and HVAC-R.
The building will serve as a training center for next-generation manufacturing in the Chicagoland area, focusing on:
- Solar Thermal Installers and Technicians
- Heating, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Mechanics and Installers
- Pipefitters and pipe welders
- Welding facilities for robotic welding, MIG, GMAW, SMAW welding, cutters, solderers, and brazers
- Industrial Engineering Technologists and Technicians
- Electro-Mechanical and Mechatronics Technologists and Technicians
Interim President Peggy Heinrich shared her thoughts on the project’s significance: “This demolition represents a transformative step for ECC as we position ourselves to become a leading hub for manufacturing and technology education. By investing in facilities like this, we are ensuring our students are fully prepared for the high-skill, high-wage careers of the future.”
The new Manufacturing and Technology Center aligns with ECC’s strategic mission to offer affordable, high-quality education tailored to workforce demands. It reflects our commitment to designing programs that respond to community needs, delivered with a spirit of service.
The project is scheduled to continue through the upcoming year, with plans for the new facility to open in fall of 2026. Additional updates on construction progress and program details will be announced as the project unfolds.
