Elgin Community College (ECC), in partnership with the Village of Hanover Park, Harper College, and community partners, celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Education and Work Center (EWC) on Thursday, October 10. The event took place from noon to 4:30 pm at the EWC, located at 6704 Barrington Road in Hanover Park.

The EWC, established in 2014, has been a cornerstone of educational and workforce development in Hanover Park, serving individuals looking to enhance their education and career opportunities. Over the past decade, the center has offered free education courses, job training, and resources that meet the needs of the local community. The event marked a decade of success in transforming lives and supporting local residents on their journeys toward personal and professional growth.

“We are proud to celebrate this milestone with Harper College, the Chicago Cook Workforce Partnership, the Village of Hanover Park, and the local community,” said Elgin Community College Interim President Peggy Heinrich, EdD. “The Education and Work Center has been a beacon of opportunity, helping residents achieve their educational and career goals. Together, we continue to expand access to life-changing resources and pathways to success.”

The vision for the EWC began with Hanover Park Mayor Rod Craig. Recognizing the village's proximity to several community college districts and the large population of first-generation immigrant families, Craig sought to create an accessible space for education and workforce development. With the support of Rep. Fred Crespo, along with leaders from ECC, Harper College, the Chicago Cook Workforce Partnership, and the State of Illinois, the center was brought to life in 2014.

Over the last 10 years, the EWC has fulfilled its mission by offering a wide range of programs, including adult basic education, English as a second language (ESL) classes, and preparatory courses for the Illinois High School Diploma Test. The center has seen record-breaking enrollment numbers for two consecutive years, demonstrating the ongoing need for and success of its services.
