2024 - Travel to Urbania, Italy, with Elgin Community College

Registration for Elgin Community College’s (ECC) summer study abroad program is now open. This year’s program will take students to Urbania, Italy, from June 28 through July 28, 2025. Students interested must apply by February 15, 2025, at elgin.edu/studyabroad. 

This will be ECC’s third study abroad trip to the country. Participants in this four-week summer program will engage in courses and cultural activities to enhance their understanding of the Italian language, culture, history, and traditions. The study abroad program is academically intensive, and students will enroll in two required courses: Italian Language, taught by Centro Studi Italiani faculty, and Topics in Humanities, taught by an ECC faculty member. 

"My study abroad adventure in Urbania, Italy, was transformative,” said David Zacker, professor of humanities, who has traveled with ECC to Urbania for the last two program years. “I immersed myself in rich culture, history, and philosophy while exploring the heart of Italian life! Join us for a life-changing month.”

Immersion and integration into the community are designed to occur through local and regional excursions, opportunities to connect with local Italians, and historical knowledge that expands students’ global consciousness. Planned program excursions include Gubbio, Urbino, Ravenna, Furlo, Fonte, Avellana, Fabriano, Verona, and Venice.

“Being in Italy for the study abroad trip in the summer of 2023 was honesty a dream come true,” said ECC student Percy Shulz. “To get out of the country and travel to Italy was really cool.”

The program is open to eligible ECC students who have a strong interest in immersing themselves in the culture, traditions, and language of Italy. Prior knowledge of Italian is not required for students to participate in this program.
